Every once in a while things just fall into place, and such was the case with this vacation. My friends Rick and Laura had an improv workshop and two shows scheduled in Lake Tahoe, which just happens to be one of my favorite places. For those of you who are not longtime followers, Rick and Laura have two girls who are my daughters best friends and often times when their parents go out of town, they stay with us. They are practically perfect in every way, as Mary Poppins would say, so it is never a problem. Anyway, Laura and I were discussing how she and Rick would need our help with the girls this month, and when Tahoe came up I said we should all go. She agreed, and a plan was formed.
On Friday morning we loaded our cars, and while Rick and Laura drove directly to Tahoe, my sister, myself and the four girls drove only as far as Vacaville, where another of my sisters lives. There we visited my nephew who has recently moved to a place with horses, dogs and chickens. It’s about as removed from life in L.A. as you can get. Within minutes, the quad and electric lawnmower were pulled out and the girls all had a blast.
My brother in-law is a great cook and famous for his homemade French fries that are somehow better than any others. My girls have been known to literally dream about them between visits, so we headed back to my sister’s and had a delicious dinner, followed by some pool time.
The next morning there was a delicious breakfast, another quick swim, and then we were off and heading for the lake. Of course we had to stop in the little town of Placerville, both because we always do when going to Tahoe, and because it’s featured in “On a Hot August Afternoon”. I don’t think the girls were properly impressed, but hey, what are you gonna do? They were anxious to get to the house Laura had found us and which promised among other things, a hot tub. So, over the mountain we drove, dropping down into South Lake Tahoe, where we were not to be disappointed! The house was even more lovely in person than in the pictures we’d seen online.
