See a Penny…

I think I mentioned the other day that in the past two weeks I’ve gone back to working on the sequel to “If By Chance”, an excerpt of which you can read here: . Well, it’s an excerpt of the first book since the next isn’t complete, obviously. Anyway, two of the main characters are brothers, one of whom believes very strongly that everything is predestined, and the other who thinks life is far more coincidental.

This has been a long week, filled with a variety of headlines from the ridiculous to the very tragic, and it’s left me wondering, destiny or coincidence? In an effort not to depress you, I’ll stay away from the more tragic stories and just focus on the two most absurd. Prince Harry, seriously? There was no security in place to take away camera phones? They clearly had no problem taking away all of their clothes, but not one person thought to say this whole capturing a memory might not be such a good idea? As long as all involved were having fun and no one got hurt, I’m all for the “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” theory, but please, don’t photograph, film or even draw it out for me! Some things are better left alone.

The other story that got my attention is the seventy-something woman accused of killing her eighty year old husband with… wait for it… a coffee mug! I know on some level this is tragic, but a coffee mug? Was this random or did this man really live eighty years, but all along was meant to be killed in this absurd manner?

So much of life seems to make no sense, and yet you hear again and again that it will all make sense in the end. What do you think, will it? Is life predetermined before we are ever born or is this as crazy a ride as it feels? If you see a penny, will you pick it up?

    Interesting question. I think it’s not an either/or answer…I think it’s both.
