The Fever

Are you watching? Do you have Olympic Fever? On the night of the opening ceremonies we had to go out, so we just recorded it to watch when we got home. Although we were tired, we sat down to watch around ten that night. I had high hopes that the Brits could pull off an entertaining open, but giant puppet babies and dozens of Mary Poppins? We decided we’d come back to it later and opted for bed instead. We still haven’t gotten back to it.

Here’s what I do love about some of what I’ve seen. The scenery. It is gorgeous. I don’t have any great interest in the cycling but I love watching the competitors ride through the English villages. I also love the overviews NBC shows every time they come back from commercials. I really need to get myself over there.

As for the events themselves, I enjoy the swimming, diving, some of the gymnastics and the beach volleyball. I’ll probably watch some of the running as well. So how about you, are you into it? Do you harbor fantasies of going for the gold?

I had Olympic fever when I was much younger. I was all over the track and field events. Had debates with friends about Florence Griffith-Joyner and Jackie Joyner-Kersee. But as I grew older, the fever waned. I appreciate the dedication it takes to make it to an Olympic team, however, my fever is no longer as strong as it used to be.
