Questions… I Have So Many Questions!

I have a question about ISBNs. Exciting, right? Okay, so maybe not, at least not to anyone who is not a writer and publishing their own books, but these are the kinds of things that can keep me up at night. I’m just about to send my next book off for formatting, and then I’m thinking I’ll go with Createspace this time instead of Bookbaby because their prices on print books are so much better. I thought I would get an assigned ISBN like I did with Bookbaby, but then they threw in that I could buy my own ISBN and be my own publisher. In essence, Createspace would then be only my distributor. This seems like a good idea unless I then have to have a business license for my publishing company. It all gets so confusing.

The good thing about this is that I will be able to buy print copies of the books (I plan on having soft cover print books made up of “Searching for My Wand” as well) and I think I’ll be able to sell directly from this blog, unless of course that opens up another can of worms. Are there rules about that as well? If any of you fabulous readers have insight into any of this, your input would be greatly appreciated.

  1. First and foremost, congrats that you’re about to “birth” a new book!

I have been my own publisher, but most recently I let Create Space be the publisher for the print version of my novel (Book Baby did the e-book conversion, so a different ISBN).

You will want to check on property tax and sales tax laws in your town and state to determine the answers to your questions. For example, I am currently in Texas. Texas law requires that I collect sales tax even if I sell a book to someone outside of Texas — but this law varies from state to state. I also pay Harris County property taxes on my publishing company, but that is based on a property inventory. With on-demand publishing, these days my inventory is much lower, which is nice. Business property taxes in your area, though, may be handled differently.

I wish I could be more helpful, but these are questions that you’ll need to investigate through your local and state governments.

I can understand why these sorts of questions would start coming to mind as it can get rather confusing. I’ll be interested myself in seeing what kinds of answers you receive.

  3. Congratulations honey :)

Sorry, I can’t answer any of your questions, it sounds like a minefield :(

    Good luck xx

  4. Ooooh now I LOVE that cover! Sounds like you are making things difficult – unless I’m clueless. I didn’t buy an IBSN. I opted for the Createspace assigned one. I can only sell through the Createspace channels which includes Amazon. I can however order my own books and sell them from my site or in person. I use paypal and which has an add to cart which would work for you having more than one book or if you just wanted to link one – then there is the buy now button. I will tell you figuring out the paypal set up made me want to pull my hair out. Hope that helps. That’s all I got ;-)
